St Alphonsus was a lawyer living in the 18th century.

He founded the order of priests known as the “Redemptorists”. He was keen to stop priests form being to overbearing and strict. He asked the priests that joined his new religious order to be more simple when preaching and more charitable when hearing confessions. In 1762 he became a bishop and is famous for his writings on moral theology.

His feast day is this week on 1st August.
